Used by Woodturners. Unique for their numerous openings and voids (always turn toward center). Interior figuring once turned is similar to Bird’s Eye. Color and texture similar to Walnut Burl. Easy to turn or cut. Relatively hard towards center of pod and will take detail nicely. This item is the seed pod from the Banksia tree (an evergreen tree which grows in Australia).

The heartwood is dark brown with bold, black streaks and hints of purple, while the sapwood is creamy white. Despite being very hard, it tools easily with minimal tear out. Maple Spalted Bowl Blanks
Highly prized for its swirling, flowery grain patterns and numerous whorls, highly figured maple seems almost to bloom as the wood is shaped on the lathe. Maple spalted burls are quite soft, so they are a pleasure to turn. The finished product has a remarkably satiny texture. This wood is air dried and wax coated. These blanks are available in three square sizes and in three different thicknesses for bowls of varying depths.
