The heartwood is dark brown with bold, black streaks and hints of purple, while the sapwood is creamy white. Despite being very hard, it tools easily with minimal tear out. Maple Spalted Bowl Blanks
Highly prized for its swirling, flowery grain patterns and numerous whorls, highly figured maple seems almost to bloom as the wood is shaped on the lathe. Maple spalted burls are quite soft, so they are a pleasure to turn. The finished product has a remarkably satiny texture. This wood is air dried and wax coated. These blanks are available in three square sizes and in three different thicknesses for bowls of varying depths.
