Festool TS 55 and TS 75 Plunge Cut Saws Review

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

I recently posted about the expensive Festool product line that Rockler is offering. Since many of the Festool products are outside the price range of my hobbyist budget I was able to locate a review.

The Festool TS 55 and TS 75 Plunge Cut Saws Review shows the benefits of the $400 circular saw. When combined with other components of the Festool product line production work is faster and easier.

Shear Cutting Pilot Router Bits

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

In a recently received woodworking catalog I noticed a new product. A straight cutting bit for routing using a top or bottom mounted template. This bit was different due to the slight angle of the cutting edge. The catalog states that cuts on difficult or end-grain have less tear out compared to conventional bits. There is a full review on Rockler’s website that can be viewed at: http://www.rockler.com/blog/index.cfm?CommentID=233

Festool Saw

Recently Rockler.com began offering a line of Festool woodworking tools. When scanning through the offerings they seemed to be competitive with the offerings of Dewalt, Porter Cable and other well known brands. That is until I saw the price of the tools. I do not see any improved features or quality to justify the high costs of the Festool product line. Maybe someone with more experience with the Festool brand can provide more insight. Below is a list of the product offering.

Google SketchUp Review

Monday, September 17th, 2007

I recently found Google SketchUp. This software can be used to design 3D models. The software is free and competes with AutoCAD’s product offerings for an occasional user. There are a lot of powerful tools I recall seeing years ago in a CAD class. Even with past drafting experience the learning curve seems to be high.

Toying around with different features I managed to create a basic drawing. If you could not tell it is supposed to be a workbench with multiple drawers on two sides. :)
My Sketchup Drawing

I do not know if I will use the program extensively in the future. I can complete drawings with a drafting ruler, triangles and some grid paper in less time. These paper drawings seem to meet my design needs. If I do master the software it will be another tool used in woodworking. The software can be downloaded from http://sketchup.google.com/. The User Manual is available in PDF form from http://dl.google.com/sketchup/gsu6/docs/ug_sketchup_win.pdf.

About.com’s Chris Baylor recently had an article detailing the build of a portable Miter Saw workstation. This innovative design could be built inexpensively using scrap lumber. The article shows step-by-step the construction process with photos. This same design could be used in the workshop and save valuable workbench space. View the article here: Miter Saw Workstation .

The Sagulator — Shelf Sag Calculator

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

MDF, Medium Density FiberboardMany of the home design shows on network TV love to use MDF for their projects. It is easily painted and is cheap to purchase. If you purchase a bookshelf at a local department store it is often made with a particle board covered with a paper veneer. Can either of this material hold up over time with 100 pounds of books on them? I have seen first hand that particle board will barely hold up to a stack of paperback novels.

There is a great calculator for figuring the deflection of a piece of material under a pre-determined weight. The Sagulator can be found as an online calculator at http://woodbin.com/calcs/sagulator.htm

In both cases we will use a 36 inch wide shelf that is 12 inches deep. The assumed weight for the shelf is 100 pounds. Below are the results:

  • ½ inch MDF will deflect .97 inches.
  • ¾ inch MDF will deflect .21 inches
  • ½ inch particle board as used in department store products will deflect 1.22 inches

There is not much difference between the ½ inch materials used. Stepping up to ¾ inch thick material greatly improves the strength of a shelf.

Kreg R3 Pocket Hole Jig Review

Kreg R3 Jig

KS Woodwork Rating (3 out of 4)

Pros:

  • Adjustable for various thicknesses of lumber.
  • Compact size will fit in smaller spaces than K3 jig.
  • Convenient carrying case.
  • Steel drill bit guides means superior quality product to competition.
  • Sampling of screws included.
  • Screws available at local retailers including Lowes.

Cons:

  • Face clamps not included.
  • 6” face clamps expensive at $25.00
  • Jig setup time greater than bench mounted K3 jig.

Review – Kreg R3 Pocket Hole Jig

I saw this product demonstrated at a woodworking show last fall. I recently had a problem that this product could solve. I purchased the kit at Lowes for $40.00 with assorted containers of additional screws that cost extra. I also purchased an additional driver set due to uncertainty about the quality. The clamps are rather expensive at $25.00 for a 6 inch face clamp. I used a similar clamp from harbor freight that cost $6.99 and has an 11 inch reach.

  • The product is neatly organized in a case that is easy to store.

  • Detailed instructions are attached to the inside of the case lid. There is no worry about losing an instruction manual.

  • An assortment of screws are provided to try

  • Additional screws can be purchased at many hardware retailers. They are available in coarse and fine screw threads in a variety of lengths.

  • A sample set of wood plugs are included with the kit.

  • Here is the 2 driver bit set that can be purchased for an additional cost. The screws have square drive heads

  • This is the clamp purchased from Harbor Freight. The Item number is 39535 and can be purchased for $6.99
